When our local and world economy was running well, I was excited to read about growing environmental concern. Almost daily I could find newspaper articles about a new environmental study or initiative under way locally or globally. I started hoping that public pressure would start pushing our government towards implementing more environmentally friendly policies.

Now that the economy has gone into a downturn and people are worried about their jobs, the economy has taken centre stage. Media attention to environmental issue was great for general public awareness. However, much more is needed if public support for mass transit, density and other sustainable practices is to gain hold any time soon.

During his years as the Mayor of Curitiba Brazil, Jamie Learner taught kids at school about recycling. The kids in turn taught their parents how to to it, and very quickly the city populace was both on board with the program and educated. I would like to see Calgary take a more direct approach to education in terms of conveying the importance of reaching sustainability.
