Added to this, houses in Calgary are typically heated with natural gas. Imagine the amount of fossil fuels consumed by Calgarians just keeping warm and moving around. Throw in our reliance on food and other products shipped in from around the world and multiply that by every city on the planet. The result looks very scary.
